Chéri Chérin

Joseph Kinkonda Kubutuka, known by his most name famous Chéri-Chérin, was born in Kinshasa
on February 16, 1955.
He did his visual art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, in the department of Ceramics and
developed his professional visual arts career after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts.
Chéri Chérin launched his career with his first painting, marking his entry into popular art. He was
one of the most representative painters of Congolese popular art.
From a young age, he developed a passion for drawing and painting, chosing to express himself
through a
vibrant, figurative, and deeply committed style.
Through his canvases, he depicted Congolese society with realism, humor, and a critical spirit. He
addressed themes such as politics, culture, daily life, and social issues.
His works have been exhibited in several African, American, and European countries, making him
a true ambassador of Congolese culture.
Beyond his artwork, Chéri Chérin leaves us an invaluable legacy. He was a mentor to many young
and well known artists, whom he trained and inspired in Kinshasa, the likes of Grady (his
daughter), J.P Mika, Moke Fils, Sapin Makengele and many others.
Thanks to him, Congolese popular art continues to flourish and endure.
Chéri Chérin participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, thus contributing to the
recognition of his work and establishing him as a leading figure in Congolese popular art
worldwide.
