The 6th edition of Art Auction east Africa is about to go live. Art Auctions is a common yet very important event in the art industry. Modern and Contemporary African art has in the past featured and sold in international auction houses like Bonhams who have a special auction dedicated to African Art.
In Nairobi, the atmosphere is yet again bubbling with excitement and anticipation as we approach Art Auction East Africa organised by Circle Art Agency. This auction house was born in 2012. Since then we have continued to see an influx of wealthy locals bidding high on pieces of artwork. International art collectors have also joined the circle of collecting African Art. This was evident in the 2018 edition where we saw numerous international telephone bidding.
Big names like Ugandan Geoffrey Mukasa, Sudan’s Rashid Diab, Kenya’s Peterson Kamwathi and Peter Elungat have traded at these auctions in the past.
Last year (2018) Nigerian Twins Seven Seven’s the hunter (1985) sold at approximately $8,000. Ugandan Geoffrey Mukasa’s In The Sugar Plantations (1993) sold at $19,370.
This year the auction features some artists who Photizo Art Gallery has had the privilege to represent. The auction features artists such as Sudan Born Yassir Ali, Kenyan born Tabitha Wa Thuku and Kamau ‘Cartoon’ Joseph.
Please find more of Cartoon Joseph’s work here https://store.photizoartgallery.com/artist/cartoon-joseph/.
