Grady Kinkonda
Born on May 13th 2000, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Grady
Kinkonda, better known by her pseudonym Grady Chéri Chérin, is a selftaught popular painter. As one might guess, she is the daughter of the
renowned Chéri Chérin. She inherited her talent from her father, one of the
most famous popular painters in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
She naturally learned to paint in her father’s workshop. She deepened her
knowledge over the years in various other local studios, working alongside
other artists such as Chris Toko and Strong Kinumbi .
Inspired by the first generations of popular painters, she develops her artistic
practice in the traditional style, commenting on historical and current sociocultural and political events. But also, being from the new generation, she is a
woman evolving in a world strongly dominated by men, she casts a strong
gaze on the history of popular painting and its current perception.
